ENGINEERING SUMMER STUDENT JOB DESCRIPTION
The Town of St Walburg is in search of a second or third year Civic Engineering summer student. This position is available ASAP and will run through the summer and early fall; pay will be $20/hour.
The summer student will work directly for the Chief Administrative Officer and all work completed will be under their authority. This will be processed and checked by the CAO with the consultation of the town council before any projects will be approved including any budget recommendations.
Tasks will vary but all will be civil engineering related. Once the work has finished by the individual, a review and possible work recommendations will be forwarded to the individual’s institution including engineering recommendations of the same.
Some examples of tasks are but not limited to:
The Town of St Walburg in coordination with the St. Walburg Tourism and Historical Committee are adding RV sites to the existing campground. The expansion area needs to be designed to accommodate “pull through” rigs. The civil engineering student will be responsible for electrical service design, water lines including connections, and sewer lines, all of which are interconnected to infrastructure connections within the town facilities. The area will include landscaping defined by the zoning bylaws which is both pleasing to the eye and which accommodates water run-off. In addition, for this area, new sewer distribution lines, new water distribution infrastructure and new roadways for the town need to be drawn up, budgeted and built;
A new road needs to be built in an area currently used for the landfill. Sightline, ditches, water and sewer lines all need to be budgeted, drawn and prepared for construction;
Storm water runoff is a problem in a few areas of the town. A plan needs to be devised to handle the spring storm water runoff including, but not limited to, further development for the town;
A 25-30 acre parcel of land needs to be subdivided with roads, sewer and water lines planned. This includes, but is not limited to, building a layout for commercial/ industrial use, costs and budgeting for prospective businesses, advertising and future development plans. The civil engineering student would be working with the town zoning bylaws and provincial statues;
The town currently has old engineering documents going back a half century or more. These documents need to be perused with a view to discarding those documents which are not useful, scanning and digitally filing those documents which have a purpose, repose/dispose or archives documents to the town’s document bylaws and standards, and ensuring that historical documentation of the town’s engineering are preserved with possible museum prepared copies;
There are ditches and culverts which need servicing i.e. sightlines need to be shot and drawn up as well as base lines including directions given to the CAO regarding how they can be possibly fixed. Drawings must be made, calculated, submitted, budgeted and red lined further to be dealt with for forthcoming expansions to the town;
Progress reporting weekly on project findings, developments and issues which may or may not have been listed in this description.
Weekly meetings with the CAO, contract engineering consultants and or persons of contact, to ensure the work is being recorded and moved along.
Possible meetings/advisement of council on issues or findings of this project. This also could derive further projects for the Town.
This position is looking to be filled ASAP. On site basic OH&S information will be given and position necessary training prudent to summer student work will be given. The successful applicant will need to provide a clean driver’s abstract as these projects will take this individual around our town. First Aid and CPR certification is an asset.

To assist with general outdoor operations of the Town, including but not limited to:
- Grass Mowing
- 2x per week Garbage Collection
- Monthly Water Meter Reading
- Filling Pot Holes
- Street Sweeping
- Other duties as assigned
40-HOURS PER WEEK, $15 PER HOUR.
QUALIFICATIONS: ABLE TO WORK WITH MINIMUM SUPERVISION, VALID CLASS 5 DRIVER’S LICENCE, AND BE A TEAM PLAYER.
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO:
-Post Secondary Student, returning in September; and,
– Member of a visible minority.
