St. Walburg joined the West Yellowhead Waste Resource Authority in 2015. This membership allows the town to coordinate with other communities in recycling and waste management. WYWRA is a non-profit organization formed by municipalities in Northwest Saskatchewan. WYWRA is committed to keeping the safety of our environment at the forefront while also exploring new and innovative ways of managing recyclable products.
The Town has replaced the single 6 yard bins (where all items needed to be sorted) to a 30 yard commingle recycle bin. This bin is removed and replaced every Wednesday. The Town has also requested 2 additional 6 yard cardboard bins. The recycle bins are taken to Lloydminster where the contents are baled, then sent on to Edmonton for final processing.
As of July 1, 2015 the Town of St. Walburg has also transformed our current Waste Disposal Site to a Transfer Site. Rather than bury the garbage that is collected every Tuesday and Friday, Public Works will transfer the collected waste from the truck to the approved WYWRA Waste Containers. When full, the bins will be removed and replaced. The full bins will be taken to the R.M. of Wilton #472, and the waste disposed of.
As of July 1, 2015 the Town of St. Walburg is issuing standard size garbage bags rather than tags at a cost of $2.00 each.
